Dundee lined up in a 4-3-3 formation and the Jags playing a 4-4-2. New boy Jamie Langfield made his debut against his former club replacing Kenny Arthur inbetween the sticks.
Thistle started as favourites and they started of the better of the two teams with Kenny Milne Derek Flemming and David Rowson causing the visitors the most trouble but they still failed to cause Speroni too much bother.
Half an hour into the game and Thistle broke the deadlock. A Derek Flemming corner from the left broke out to David Rowson on the outside of the box, the midfielder steadied himself and shot sweetly into Speroni's top right corner.
As Dundee pushed for an equaliser before the break, new boy Langfield was called into action saving a routine shot straight at him at the second attempt after spilling his first attempt. Langfield looked strong at crosses although his kicking left a bit to desire.
Dundee looked sharper after the break with both teams having a few chances, Jamie Mitchell was played through by Grady and chipped Speroni from a tight angle, unfortunatley the ball just went past with Kenny Milne screaming at the midfielder for not squaring it to him.
Controversy followed when Nacho Novo appeared to stamp on Iain Ross as the left back hit the ground the referee totally ignored it as did his assistant on the Jackie Husband side. This was one of many blunders by whistler Mike Ritchie.
As Thistle sat back they were put under tremendous pressure as Dundee attacked but with some determined tackling and work it looked like the Jags might just hang on for the win.
However the feared became a reality in the 85th minute when Stephen Milne was played in on the left side of the box, hands raised from the Thistle defence looking for offside the nippy striker played in Novo who shot into the roof of the net from 3 yards out into the helpless Langfield. Heartbreak for the Thistle players and fans was to become 100 times worse.
The absolute unthinkable happened in the 89th minute. A cross into the box was punched by the out rushing Langfield to Barry Smith, the Dundee skipper shot powefully into the packed box and the ball flew into the net past Langfield. The heartache was clearly visible, with a few players flaberghasted and the Jackie Husband stand emptying as the fans couldnt take anymore.
Thistle only had thereselves to blame for sitting back on a one-nil lead and wasting too many chances.
